About
Artist Statement
My work is often created on the premise of search. The act of seeking out traces of things left behind and searching for an understanding in uncertainty is fundamental to my practice. Individual pieces that come together to form a whole is the basis from where I build my forms, recreating a celebration and a tension in fluidity and movement. The surfaces are patterned with designs that reference West African and Caribbean prints along with floral patterns from the British Arts and Crafts movement. These patterned pieces represent a desire to understand the layers and pieces of history and culture that have had an influence on my background. When constructing my work, I often think of ways to represent the precarious fragility of a pieced together whole. As I seek to understand the coming together of these layers and pieces, I also intend to emphasize the ambiguity that is created with the spaces and cracks left in-between. My love of working with clay and layered patterns has allowed me to reflect on the metaphoric uses of these materials and processes, and the catharsis that emerges through their use. My hope is to inspire within the viewer a spirit of search and an appreciation of the beauty in those elements of life that are difficult to define or go unseen.
